Scotland produces more than 40% of the world exported whisky from over 140 active distilleries organized into five distinct regions -- Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Islay, and Campbeltown -- each with a flavor profile as distinct as wine appellations. These 10 distilleries represent the pinnacle of a craft that has been practiced in Scotland since at least 1494.

The world's best-selling single malt Scotch whisky has been produced continuously at the Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown, Speyside since William Grant and his sons built it by hand in 1886. The distillery produces approximately 14 million liters of spirit annually and its 12-year-old expression -- launched in 1963 as the first actively marketed single malt Scotch -- is credited with creating the global single malt category that now represents a multi-billion dollar industry.

The most peat-smoked distillery on Islay -- an island of eight distilleries off Scotland's west coast known for producing the most intensely flavored Scotch whiskies in the world -- Ardbeg was founded in 1815 and has spent periods of closure that near-mythologized its already intense character. Its Ten Year Old expression consistently tops international whisky competitions, and Ardbeg Day, held annually at the distillery, draws enthusiasts from 50 countries.

The most prestigious Scotch whisky brand in the world is produced at Easter Elchies House on the Speyside river and is distinguished by its exclusive use of sherry casks from Jerez, Spain -- which impart the rich dried fruit and spice notes that define the Macallan house style. In 2019, a bottle of The Macallan 1926 sold for 1.5 million pounds at Sotheby's, the highest price ever achieved at auction for a bottle of whisky.

The Royal Warrant holder on Islay -- Prince Charles was given the warrant in 1994 after reportedly proclaiming his love for Laphroaig's medicinal, seaweed, and iodine character -- has been produced at the distillery's white buildings on the Port Ellen shore since 1815. Laphroaig uses its own malting floor, one of only a handful of distilleries still maltingtheir own barley, and cuts the peat by hand from bogs on the Kilbride Farm it has owned since 1886.

The first distillery to be licensed under the 1823 Excise Act that effectively legalized Scotch whisky production, The Glenlivet was founded by George Smith in the remote glen of the River Livet in 1824 after receiving protection from King George IV. Its 12-year-old expression is the best-selling single malt in the United States, and the name Glenlivet was so synonymous with quality Speyside whisky in the 19th century that 28 other distilleries hyphenated it to their names.

The northernmost mainland distillery in Scotland -- located on the Orkney Islands, 16 kilometres north of Scotland's mainland -- Highland Park has been producing whisky since Magnus Eunson, a church officer and illicit distiller, built the first operation in 1798. Its whiskies balance heather-honey sweetness against a gentle peat smoke derived from Orkney heather peat, a combination so distinctive it has earned Highland Park 12-year-old the designation of Best Spirit in the World by Whisky Advocate.

Distilled since 1816 on the south coast of Islay in a complex of white-painted buildings overlooking Lagavulin Bay, this distillery produces one of the most characterful single malts in the world -- a deeply peated whisky with 35 parts per million of phenols that spends 16 years in ex-sherry casks. Its 16-year-old expression is so beloved that it became famous globally after being repeatedly referenced as Nick Offerman's favorite drink on the American television series Parks and Recreation.

The Highland distillery founded in 1839 on the shores of the Cromarty Firth produces whiskies of exceptional richness through a maturation program that uses a range of casks including Gonzalez Byass Apostoles sherry butts, Tawny Port pipes, and first-fill bourbon barrels. The Dalmore 62 Single Higlhand Malt -- of which only 12 bottles exist -- sold for 87,500 pounds per bottle when released in 2002, establishing the distillery's reputation for ultra-premium age-statement expressions.

The most innovative distillery in Scotland was revived in 2001 after being closed since 1994 and has become famous for releasing a dizzying range of experimental expressions -- from the ultra-lightly peated Classic Laddie to Octomore, the world's most heavily peated whisky with over 250 parts per million of phenols. Bruichladdich is the only distillery to bottle all its expressions on Islay itself and grows 30% of its barley on the island, supporting a revived agricultural tradition.

One of the last family-owned distilleries in Speyside, Glenfarclas has been run by the Grant family since 1865 -- six generations across 160 years -- and produces an old-fashioned style of rich, sherry-forward Highland malt that has remained largely unchanged since the Victorian era. Its Family Casks range, released annually since 1994, offers vintage single casks dating back to 1952, providing the most comprehensive vertical tasting of any distillery in Scotland.
