Not one industry, four different businesses

These ten names get grouped together as "Taiwan tech," but they compete in genuinely different businesses with different economics. TSMC is a pure-play foundry — it doesn't design a single chip that carries its name, it fabricates other companies' designs and is priced on capacity utilization and how far ahead its process node is. Foxconn, Pegatron, and Quanta are contract manufacturers and ODMs: they're paid to assemble someone else's product to spec, which means thin margins and revenue that moves with their customers' order books, not their own brand strength. MediaTek and Realtek are fabless chip designers — they draw the blueprints and outsource the actual manufacturing, often to TSMC itself. ASUS and Acer are consumer brands competing on retail shelf presence. Delta Electronics and Advantech sit closer to industrial infrastructure than consumer tech at all.

Knowing which category a company sits in explains more about why it's on this list than any single headline figure does. A foundry's fortunes rise and fall with the entire semiconductor cycle; an ODM's fortunes rise and fall with whichever brand it's currently assembling for.

Why the island matters more than any one company

Taiwan's outsized place on a "tech companies" list isn't really about any single firm — it's about geographic concentration. A large share of the world's most advanced logic chips are fabricated on the island, which is why the phrase "silicon shield" gets used in geopolitical discussion of Taiwan: the island's economic and strategic importance is tied directly to how hard the rest of the world would find it to replace that manufacturing capacity elsewhere on short notice. That concentration is also why disruptions in Taiwan (earthquakes, geopolitical tension, even local drought affecting the water-intensive fabrication process) tend to ripple into global electronics pricing in a way that a similar disruption almost anywhere else wouldn't.
