Rajasthan's royal past survives as some of India's grandest hotels, from the Taj Lake Palace floating on Lake Pichola in Udaipur to Jodhpur's Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the world's largest private residences with its Art Deco interiors intact. Jaipur alone contributes three of the ten: the former Maharaja's residence at Rambagh Palace, the 475-year-old Samode Palace with its mirrored Sheesh Mahal hall, and the reimagined 250-year-old Sujan Rajmahal Palace. Elsewhere, forts turned hotels — Alila Fort Bishangarh, RAAS Devigarh, and Mihir Garh's nine-suite desert retreat — trade palace opulence for hilltop and desert settings.
