Li River or Reed Flute Cave? Top 10 Things to Do in Guilin
Ten sights in and around Guilin, from the Li River to the Yulong River, ranked by how often people read about each one on English Wikipedia over the past year. How we ranked this: We took every sight in Guilin prefecture, meaning the city and its counties such as Yangshuo, Longsheng, Lipu and Xing'an, that has its own English Wikipedia article about the sight itself; towns, counties and umbrella articles were left out. We ranked them by how often that article was read by people, not bots, on all devices from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026, using the Wikimedia Pageviews API. More views means a higher place. This measures how much readers look a sight up, not visitor numbers or quality. The facts in each entry come from that sight's Wikipedia article. Reed Flute Cave, nicknamed the 'Palace of Natural Arts', is a cave and tourist attraction in Guilin. Inside, multicoloured lights pick out stalactites, stalagmites and formations named after legends, such as the Crystal Palace, Fish Tail Peak and Dragon Pagoda. Look for the more than 70 ink inscriptions of poems and travelogues on the walls; the oldest dates to 792 AD, in the Tang dynasty. The cave is named after the reeds outside, which can be made into flutes, and it was rediscovered in the 1940s by refugees fleeing Japanese troops.

Elephant Trunk Hill got its name because it looks like an elephant drinking water. It stands at the confluence of the Taohua River and the Lijiang River. The round opening under the trunk is called Water-Moon Cave, because at night the reflection of the moon can be seen through the arch, as if it were under the water and floating on it at the same time.

A bamboo raft ride down the Yulong River is the thing to do here. Unlike the busy Li River, the Yulong has no motorized boat traffic and relies completely on bamboo rafts to ferry passengers downriver, a popular tourist activity that begins at the Yulong Bridge, a 400-year-old stone bridge. The river is a small tributary of the Li River and runs for over 35 kilometres (22 mi) through villages of Yangshuo County such as Litang, Chaolong, Yima and Gaotian. It is shallow, around 5 meters (16 ft) at its deepest.
