Australian Black Summer Bushfires (2019-2020)

The Australian Black Summer Bushfires incinerated 18.6 million hectares, an area larger than England and Wales combined, making them the largest recorded fire complex on the continent. An estimated three billion animals perished, including 143 million mammals, and the fires released 830 million tonnes of CO₂, more than twice Australia’s annual emissions.
