Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion, Kyoto)
Japan's most photographed temple (built 1397). Three-story pavilion covered in gold leaf perfectly reflecting in pond. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Burned down 1950 (monk suicide), rebuilt 1955. 2.8M+ annual visitors—3rd highest among Kyoto temples, trailing only Kiyomizu-dera. Free ¥400 ticket, about 33% cheaper than Todai-ji's ¥600. Peak times: 10am-2pm (expect crowds). Early morning (7am) recommended.
