Opening weekend results and total domestic/worldwide gross
| Rank | Item | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | The Super Mario Galaxy Movie | 10.0 | Year's verified commercial champion with $888M+ worldwide and $131.7M domestic opening — the biggest proven gross of summer 2026 |
| #2 | Spider-Man: Brand New Day | 9.0 | Leads all 2026 box office odds with a 54.5% Polymarket probability of finishing as the year's top domestic film and $2.54B worldwide projection |
| #3 | Toy Story 5 | 8.0 | Tracking at $130–160M domestic opening — the biggest 2026 projected debut for any animated film and franchise record setter |
| #4 | The Odyssey | 7.0 | A $250M budget requires massive returns, but Nolan's Oppenheimer earned $952M and tracking suggests The Odyssey can approach that |
| #5 | Project Hail Mary | 7.0 | $639M+ worldwide on an original IP with no pre-existing franchise is the summer's most impressive commercial achievement relative to expectations |
| #6 | Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu | 6.0 | $181.4M worldwide total is soft by Star Wars standards, suggesting the franchise has not fully recovered its theatrical dominance |
| #7 | Disclosure Day | 5.0 | Modest $45–59M projected opening typical of prestige Spielberg sci-fi; legs-driven rather than opening-driven performer |
| #8 | Minions & Monsters | 4.0 | $63M global opening is solid for the franchise but not dominant; July 1 date will determine final ceiling |
| #9 | Mortal Kombat II | 3.0 | $63M global opening weekend is mid-range for a May blockbuster and reflects the franchise's ceiling rather than underperformance |
| #10 | Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning | 2.0 | $598.8M worldwide against a $300–400M budget is the season's most significant commercial disappointment despite a franchise-best domestic opening |

How This List Mixes Sure Things and Bets
Half of this list is a known quantity before opening weekend: Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Mortal Kombat II are sequels to titles with an established audience, so the main question is quality, not whether people will show up. The other half is a genuine swing — Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and Spielberg's Disclosure Day are original, non-franchise event films riding entirely on director reputation and marketing, which is a much riskier bet for a studio and, often, a more interesting one for an audience tired of sequels.
Two entries are trying to do something harder than either of those: hand a beloved character to a new creative team without losing what made the character work. Spider-Man: Brand New Day resets Peter Parker after the world-altering ending of No Way Home, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is the franchise's first theatrical release since 2019, adapting a character built for episodic TV into a two-hour film. Both carry more expectation-management risk than a straightforward sequel.
One Format Worth Knowing About
If you only see one of these films in a premium format, The Odyssey is the one built for it. Nolan shot the film entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras — a technically demanding format he has used in pieces before (Dunkirk, Oppenheimer) but never for an entire feature — so a standard digital screening will genuinely show you a different, lower-resolution version of the movie than a true IMAX 70mm print. Not every city has a theater that can run that print format, so it's worth checking before assuming your local IMAX screen qualifies.
