$199 to $0.99 in two months. $170 million writedown.
Jeff Bezos personally drove the development of a phone whose killer feature was "Dynamic Perspective" β a 3D effect using four front-facing cameras that made people motion-sick and drained the battery in hours. It launched at $199 with a contract in July 2014. By September, Amazon marked it down to $0.99. The company took a $170 million writedown. The Fire Phone lasted exactly one generation and proved that being good at selling books doesn't translate to smartphone design.
