Pammukale Travertine Terraces, Turkey

Pammukale’s brilliant white travertine terraces are the world’s most visually striking thermal spring deposits, formed by calcium-rich waters cascading over a 200-meter escarpment in Denizli province for millennia. With a flow rate of approximately 1,000 liters per second, the springs gradually build layered pools that reflect sunlight into natural infinity basins. This formation is 40% more extensive than the runner-up thermal terraces in Yellowstone, covering over 2.5 kilometers. Ancient Romans bathed here 2,000 years ago, and today’s visitors can walk on the same white crust, which remains cooler than the average rock surface at 35°C due to constant water percolation.
