Cave diving combines the technical demands of scuba diving with the confined, dark, disorienting environment of submerged cave systems, where a lost guideline or equipment failure can be lethal because there is no surface to ascend to. The underwater caves of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico — the world's longest known flooded cave systems — have claimed numerous lives. The 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand, which required elite cave divers including John Volanthen and Richard Stanton to navigate 4 kilometres of flooded passages, brought the sport to global attention and resulted in a British diver receiving Australia's highest civilian honour.
