The vaquita is the most endangered marine mammal on Earth, with fewer than 10 individuals remaining in Mexico's Gulf of California. This tiny porpoise has declined 98% since 1997 due solely to illegal gillnets set for totoaba. Conservationists estimate that without removing these nets, the species will go extinct by 2025. By contrast, the #6 Mountain Gorilla population has grown to 1,000, proving that determined intervention can reverse declines.
