Harry Harlow's 1950sā1960s University of Wisconsin studies isolated infant rhesus monkeys from their mothers and placed them with wire surrogate figures. While the research demonstrated the critical importance of maternal contact, the extreme psychological suffering inflicted on the animals remains one of the most cited examples of unethical experimentation.
