F.W. Murnau's 1927 silent film earned three Academy Awards at the inaugural 1929 ceremony including a special "Artistic Quality of Production" award never given again. It is the highest-rated silent film on the Sight & Sound poll and is credited with perfecting camera mobility through seamless tracking shots over a decade before sound equipment allowed it easily. Roger Ebert called it "one of the most beautiful films ever made."
