Vittorio De Sica's 1948 Italian neorealist film, shot entirely on location in Rome using non-professional actors, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Film. Roger Ebert ranked it among his Great Movies and called it "the best film of the Italian neorealism movement." Its influence on cinema verite, social realist filmmaking, and the French New Wave is immeasurable.
