The compact cassette and compact disc, both born from Philips in Eindhoven, revolutionized personal audio storage. The cassette, launched in 1963, sold over 100 billion units globally by its peak—a volume 100% greater than the runner-up vinyl format. The CD, co-developed with Sony in 1982, offered 74 minutes of digital audio, 30% more data than the typical rival of the time, and its error-correction algorithm set a new benchmark for optical media. Together, these formats dominated music distribution for 50 years, directly outlasting the commercial lifetime of Bluetooth's (ranked #4) early mobile standards.
