Mass killers reenact murders as Hollywood musicals. Unwatchable. Essential.
Joshua Oppenheimer asked Indonesian death squad leaders to reenact their 1965 mass killings in the style of their favorite Hollywood genres. They gleefully obliged — staging musical numbers and gangster scenes around real torture methods. The result is the most surreal, morally disorienting film ever made. Werner Herzog and Errol Morris executive-produced it. It was nominated for an Oscar. One of the killers eventually breaks down on camera. Nothing prepares you for this.
