Dubai has a reputation for being ruinously expensive, but the city also contains a remarkable number of world-class free and budget experiences that most visitors never discover because travel agencies have no financial incentive to mention them. These cost under AED 100 per person.

The world's largest choreographed fountain performs for free every evening from the Burj Lake promenade at 6 PM and 8 PM, and the view from the Souk Al Bahar bridge is arguably better than from the paid Dubai Mall observation deck.

Al Fahidi's wind-tower architecture, courtyard galleries, and the XVA Art Hotel's rooftop terrace are all free to wander, and the coffee shops charging AED 15 for karak tea are providing better value than most other beverages in the emirate.

The traditional wooden water taxi crossing Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira costs AED 1 and takes three minutes, offering the closest thing to genuine old Dubai transport still operating โ and the view back at the historic skyline explains why architects bothered to preserve it.

The Jumeirah Beach Residence public beach and 1.7-kilometre beachfront walk costs nothing, the sea temperature averages 28ยฐC from October to May, and the street food market behind the beach means lunch need not cost more than AED 30.

The Deira Spice Souk is one of the last functioning atmospheric souks in the Gulf and costs nothing to enter โ the sensory experience of saffron, frankincense, dried lemons, and rose water packed into 100-year-old covered arcades is worth the taxi fare from anywhere in the city.

Kite Beach's consistent onshore breeze makes it the best beginner kitesurfing and wakeboarding location in the UAE, with equipment rental from AED 50 an hour, and the southern end of the beach is also the best spot to photograph the Burj Al Arab from sea level for free.

The oldest building in Dubai โ Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1787 โ charges AED 3 to enter its seven-room museum, which remains the most affordable cultural experience in the city and explains more about pre-oil Emirati life than any Dubai Mall LED display.

Al Mamzar Park in Deira charges AED 5 entry and provides four beaches, an Olympic-size pool, barbecue areas, and some of the only genuine grass lawns in Dubai โ a revelation if you've spent a week in the steel-and-glass canyons of Downtown.

The Palm Monorail journey from Atlantis The Palm to the Gateway Hub costs AED 15 and offers aerial views across the entire Palm island and Dubai Marina that would cost AED 300 from the Nakheel Mall observation deck.

The 3.2-kilometre Dubai Canal waterway from Business Bay to the sea has a fully lit pedestrian and cycling path that is free, flat, and completely empty before 7 AM โ when the cityscape reflections on the canal and the Burj Khalifa catching the first light constitute the most cinematic free spectacle in the UAE.
