Nepal's Sagarmatha National Park covers 1,148 sq km in the eastern Himalayas and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. It contains the world's highest peak β Mount Everest (8,849m) β along with Lhotse (8,516m) and Cho Oyu (8,188m). The park protects snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan tahr, and over 150 bird species. The Sherpa people have lived here for centuries and their culture forms an integral part of its UNESCO designation.
