MasterChef began on the BBC in 1990 and has since been adapted in more than 60 countries, making it one of the most widely licensed formats in television. Its premise - amateur home cooks judged over successive elimination rounds - is the template most later culinary competitions worked from, and the British, Australian and US versions each developed distinct house styles from it.
