Mindo Cloud Forest, Ecuador

Mindo Cloud Forest delivers the most concentrated hummingbird spectacle in the Americas, with 58 species flitting through just 1,200 acres of protected mid-elevation forest. This density outperforms #2 Kruger National Park's entire raptor diversity within a fraction of the area. A single morning walk along the main Sendero del Bosque Nublado trail yields dozens of sightings including the sword-billed hummingbird (the only bird with a bill longer than its body) and the vibrant cock-of-the-rock lek, where up to 30 males display simultaneously. The bird count here exceeds 500 species, 30% more than the average cloud forest of similar size, and annual rainfall of 2,500 mm keeps the understory lush and active year-round.
