The crossbow's trigger mechanism, developed in 5th century BCE China, enabled a draw weight of 50 kilograms—double that of a contemporary longbow—with a lock time under 0.2 seconds. Its repeating variant printed up to 12 bolts per minute, a fire rate triple that of the runner-up anywhere in the ancient world.
