Nara's ancient deer park is arguably the most magical free attraction in Japan, where over 1,200 wild sika deer roam freely among 8th-century temples and UNESCO World Heritage monuments. Children are captivated by the tame deer, who bow to request shika senbei crackers sold for 200 JPY (approx. 10 HKD) per pack throughout the park. Todai-ji Temple houses the world's largest bronze Buddha at 15 metres tall, and entry costs just 800 JPY per adult. Nara is a 45-minute train ride from Osaka or Kyoto, making it a perfect half-day addition to any Kansai itinerary. TripAdvisor ranks Nara Park as the top outdoor attraction in the Kansai region with a near-perfect 4.8 out of 5.
