Shamian Island (沙面岛) is a 0.3 km² former British and French colonial concession in Guangzhou's Liwan District, its tree-shaded boulevards lined with over 150 preserved European-style consulates, villas, and churches dating from the 1860s-1940s. It is one of the most photogenic and stroller-friendly neighbourhoods in China, with excellent pedestrianised streets, tree canopy, independent cafes, and craft boutiques. Mafengwo users rate it 4.7/5 and it is consistently called "the most peaceful and family-friendly neighbourhood in Guangzhou." Entry is free. The island is 15 minutes by Metro from Guangzhou South station; couples and families with young children love the slow-paced European atmosphere.
