This version is best remembered as Ralph Fiennes's film debut — and what a debut. Fiennes's Heathcliff is neither romanticized nor sympathetically framed: he is cruel, obsessive, and genuinely frightening. Juliette Binoche plays a dual role as Cathy/Cathy II with characteristically intense physicality. The film was a box office disappointment but has aged exceptionally well, particularly now that Fiennes is recognized as one of the great screen actors of his generation.
