Timothy Dalton's Heathcliff — brooding, dark, and physically imposing — gave the film an intense gothic energy. Anna Calder-Marshall's Cathy is equally strong. This British production is rarely discussed but consistently recommended by literary scholars as a thoughtful, faithful adaptation. Dalton's portrayal predated his Bond years and demonstrated a range that studio casting would mostly fail to use.
