Tonya Harding's Knee Attack on Nancy Kerrigan (1994)
Tonya Harding's ex-husband hired a thug to club Nancy Kerrigan's right knee with a metal baton on January 6, 1994, at the US Figure Skating Championships, cracking the kneecap and forcing Kerrigan to withdraw. Harding won that competition but was banned for life in June 1994 and fined $100,000, a steeper punishment than the underarm bowling incident, where no player faced a lifetime ban. Over 300 media outlets covered the attack, turning the 1994 Olympics into a legal spectacle; Kerrigan recovered via surgery to win silver, while Harding finished 8th. This remains the only premeditated physical assault on a competitor in Olympic history, with a 74% of careers ended by similar attacks.
