Joe Theismann's leg break remains the most iconic compound fracture in NFL history. During a Monday Night Football game in 1985, Lawrence Taylor sacked Theismann with such force that his tibia and fibula snapped audibly on live national television. Witnesses report the bone protruded through the skin, and Taylor immediately waved frantically for medical help, visibly horrified by the result. This injury is more graphic than Kevin Ware's NCAA compound fracture (#2) because it occurred in a collision of two elite athletes rather than a solo landing.
