The belief that students learn best through a preferred sensory mode—visual, auditory, or kinesthetic—is a persistent and harmful myth in education. Despite its widespread acceptance, with many educators still teaching it, over 30 years of cognitive science research have found no evidence to support its effectiveness. A definitive 2018 review of 31 studies concluded that matching instruction to learning style offers no benefit. This misconception can lead to misdirected resources; schools that abandon this myth can reallocate funds to evidence-based teaching methods. The focus should instead be on diverse instructional strategies that benefit all learners, rather than attempting to cater to unsubstantiated individual learning styles.
