Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram
Mahabalipuram features 7th–8th century Pallava rock-cut temples, chariots and the giant Descent of the Ganges relief. The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu includes rathas (chariot-shaped temples), mandapas (cave sanctuaries), and the open-air relief known as the Descent of the Ganges. Built under the Pallava dynasty, the site is known for its monolithic structures and intricate carvings. It was inscribed in 1984 and meets four UNESCO criteria: (i), (ii), (iii) and (vi). The monuments influenced art in Cambodia, Vietnam and Java.
