Drawn into what was widely billed as the 'Group of Death' alongside former champions Uruguay, Italy, and England, Costa Rica topped the group unbeaten. They then won a penalty shootout over Greece in the round of 16 before finally falling to the Netherlands on penalties in the quarterfinals — an extraordinary overachievement for a team given little chance of even escaping the group.
