Süreyya Ayhan holds the Turkish national record in the women's 1500 meters at 3:55.33, set at the 2003 World Championships. This mark makes her 2.5 seconds faster than the second-fastest Turkish runner, Elvan Abeylegesse, a gap rarely seen in elite middle-distance athletics. In 2002, she became the first Turkish woman to win a European Championship gold, finishing in 3:58.41. Her silver at the 2003 World Championships remains Turkey's only medal in the event until 2023. Ayhan's record is also 4 seconds faster than the average time of the top five Turkish female 1500m runners, establishing a clear benchmark.
