Lavender rivals low-dose benzos for anxiety. Prescribed in Germany.
Most aromatherapy is pseudoscience, but lavender is the exception. Linalool, lavender's primary compound, has been shown in randomized controlled trials to reduce anxiety scores comparable to low-dose benzodiazepines — without the addiction risk. A 2019 systematic review of 90 studies confirmed anxiolytic effects. Lavender oil capsules (Silexan/Lavela) are prescribed in Germany as a first-line anxiety treatment. Inhaled lavender reduces cortisol and improves sleep quality in ICU patients.
