"I love the smell of napalm in the morning." The most quoted line in the film belongs to Duvall's Lt. Col. Kilgore — a deranged, surfboard-toting cavalry commander who orders a napalm strike on a Vietnamese village so his men can catch good waves. The character was a devastating satire of American military hubris, and Duvall brought a terrifying authenticity to the madness. He earned his second Oscar nomination for the role.
