Beartooth Highway

The Beartooth Highway climbs 20 switchbacks to reach 10,947 feet, offering a white-knuckle drive that Charles Kuralt called America's most beautiful. While Trail Ridge Road is higher, Beartooth's 68 miles feature more dramatic vertical relief—you ascend from 5,200 feet at Red Lodge to the summit, a rise of 5,747 feet. This is steeper than the average alpine road in the Rockies, making the drive both thrilling and visually stunning.
