Inspired Avatar's floating mountains. 3,000+ sandstone pillars. 3 million visitors/year.
The sandstone pillar formations in Hunan Province, China, inspired the floating mountains in James Cameron's Avatar — and Cameron admitted it. The park officially renamed one pillar "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" in 2010. Over 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars rise above the subtropical forest, many exceeding 200 meters. The glass-bottomed Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Bridge, suspended 300 meters above the valley floor, added another layer of viral photo opportunity. 3 million visitors annually.
