More sheep than people. Closed to tourists in 2019 after going viral.
Eighteen volcanic islands between Norway and Iceland with a population of 53,000 and more sheep than people. The Faroe Islands went from "Where?" to every travel photographer's bucket list after drone footage of the Mulafossur waterfall — cascading directly off a seaside cliff into the ocean — went viral in 2016. Grass-roofed villages, dramatic sea stacks, and perpetual moody fog create conditions so photogenic that the Faroes temporarily "closed" to tourists in 2019 for environmental maintenance.
