Gangnam Style — PSY

Gangnam Style did something no video had done before: reach a billion views, a milestone it hit in December 2012. PSY's horse-riding dance and Korean-language lyrics proved, years before K-pop's current global run, that a song didn't need English to become the world's biggest meme. It has since passed 5 billion views, but the number matters less than the fact that it happened first.
