Pinnacles National Park, California

Pinnacles National Park, formed from an ancient volcano transported 200 miles north by tectonic forces, is one of only two US national parks where California condors, with a population of 180 wild individuals, can be regularly spotted soaring above its craggy peaks. Its talus cave system creates a unique microclimate that harbors rare invertebrates like the Pinnacles shieldback katydid, found nowhere else on Earth. The condor recovery program here has boosted the species from 22 birds in 1982 to today's numbers, making each sighting a testament to conservation success.
