Congaree National Park, South Carolina

Protecting the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in North America, Congaree is home to trees forming some of the highest forest canopies in the eastern United States. Its Champion Tree Trail passes trees over 500 years old, and the park's synchronous firefly event each May draws thousands to witness a natural light show unique to this forest.
