Google Quantum Chip Achieves Fault-Tolerant Milestone

Google's Willow chip, unveiled in December 2024, showed that errors fall as more qubits are added, cutting the error rate in half with each step from a 3x3 to a 7x7 qubit grid, a below-threshold error-correction result published in Nature. It also completed a benchmark computation in under five minutes that would take one of the fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years. In October 2025, Google's Quantum Echoes algorithm ran on Willow 13,000 times faster than the best classical approach, a step toward practical uses in molecular and materials research.
