James Earl Ray's assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis on 4 April 1968 β the night before King was to lead a march in support of striking sanitation workers β triggered riots in over 100 American cities and shifted the civil rights movement toward a more confrontational politics. King's death removed the movement's most effective advocate of nonviolent mass action at a critical moment.
