Bell Labs

Founded in 1925 as the research arm of AT&T, Bell Labs produced the transistor (1947), the Unix operating system (1969), the C programming language (1972), the laser, cellular network technology, and information theory — a body of invention that no single institution has matched before or since. Its researchers collected nine Nobel Prizes.
