The Alchemist
Paulo Coelho published this allegorical novel about following one's Personal Legend in Brazil in 1988 and it was initially rejected by publishers before becoming the best-selling Portuguese-language book in history. It has now sold over 65 million copies worldwide, been translated into 80 languages, and held the Guinness World Record for most translated book by a living author. Its message — that the universe conspires to help those who pursue their true calling — resonates across cultures and generations with a simplicity that has made it as influential in boardrooms as in schools.
