Sebastiao Salgado

Brazilian social documentary photographer (born 1944) whose epic black-and-white images chronicle the human condition with extraordinary beauty and empathy. His monumental projects Workers and Genesis took decades to complete, spanning over 100 countries. Received the W. Eugene Smith Grant and founded Instituto Terra, reforesting over 600 hectares of Atlantic Forest. His work is slower than the average documentary project, often taking a decade to complete, and his Genesis project alone required 30 trips over eight years.
