Cindy Sherman

American artist (born 1954) who redefined conceptual photography through her elaborate self-portraits exploring identity, gender roles, and media representation. Her groundbreaking Untitled Film Stills series (1977-1980) deconstructed Hollywood archetypes and became a cornerstone of postmodern art. In 2011, one of her photographs sold for 3.89 million dollars, then a record for a photograph at auction, which is cheaper than the typical rival among top auction prices for contemporary photography in that year.
