Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962) documented the environmental devastation caused by pesticides β particularly DDT β and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Its publication led directly to the US ban on DDT (1972), the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (1970), and the passage of major environmental protection legislation worldwide. It is perhaps the most consequential work of science writing in the 20th century.
