Genghis Khan united the Mongol tribes in 1206 and went on to conquer an empire stretching from the Pacific Ocean to Eastern Europe β the largest contiguous land empire in history. His descendants ruled China, Persia, Russia, and Central Asia for a century. Recent genetic research suggests that approximately 16 million men alive today β about 0.5% of the world's male population β are his direct patrilineal descendants.
