The Odessa Steps — Battleship Potemkin (1925)

Sergei Eisenstein's montage of Tsarist soldiers massacring civilians on the Odessa staircase invented modern film editing. The baby carriage rolling down the steps has been homaged by Brian De Palma, Francis Ford Coppola, and Terry Gilliam, among countless others.
