AFI #40. On greeting cards worldwide. Hanks' delivery made it universal.
Tom Hanks delivered Mrs. Gump's homespun wisdom so perfectly that the line became a universal shorthand for life's unpredictability. Screenwriter Eric Roth adapted it from Winston Groom's novel, but Hanks' delivery β slow, earnest, utterly sincere β made it a cultural phenomenon. It ranked #40 on the AFI's greatest quotes list, appeared on hundreds of greeting cards, and has been quoted in commencement speeches at every level of education around the world.
