"I'll be back" — The Terminator (1984)

Schwarzenegger wanted "I will be back." Cameron said no. History made.

"I'll be back" proved that a simple threat could launch a thousand imitations — and a political career. Arnold Schwarzenegger almost saw the line rewritten to "I will be back" because his Austrian accent struggled with contractions, but director James Cameron insisted on the original phrasing. The line has been parodied in 400+ films and TV episodes, making it the most-referenced movie quote in pop culture. On a quantified basis, it appears 20% more often in Google Books than #4's "You can't handle the truth!" and even propelled Schwarzenegger to use it in his 2003 gubernatorial victory speech, heard by 12.6 million voters.
